Taking care of your pearls
While diamonds are ranked 10 on Mohs Hardness Scale, pearls are ranked 2.5 on the scale, which means they are considered as a very soft kind of gems. Special care should be taken so that your pearls can maintain its shimmer.
The first rule is to put on your pearl jewellery last, after lotion, make-up, perfume, hairspray or any other products which contains chemicals, and even after getting dressed. Always prevent wearing pearls with clothes made of rough fabrics. Your pearl jewellery should be the first thing to be removed before getting undressed.
Before putting your pearls away, wipe them gently with a piece of fine, soft cloth. Each piece of pearl jewellery you purchase from Harty comes with a soft little velvet pouch. Always keep your pearl jewellery in this pouch once removed to prevent scratches. Do not keep your pearls in plastic bags or containers as plastic can emit a chemical that can damage or erode your pearls.
Do not wear your pearls in the pool, bath, shower, sauna, or steam bath. Pearl jewellery should never be submerged in water. The reason is that pearls are mounted on your jewellery with epoxy glue. Prolonged contact with moisture or water can dissolve the epoxy and ultimately the pearl can detach from your jewellery.
Remove your pearls jewellery before sports or exercise to avoid contact with perspiration or damage.
Wear your pearls often! Give them some love! Your body's natural oil can keep them lustrous.
